The School Effectiveness and Inequality Initiative (SEII) in the MIT Economics Department is seeking a motivated and organized Research Assistant who will support efforts to evaluate and improve education programs and policies. Examples of past and on-going research projects can be found at seii.mit.edu. The Research Assistant will work directly under Professors Joshua Angrist, Parag Pathak, and David Autor.
Specific tasks shall include: constructing original research data sets; preparing data for analysis; conducting analysis in statistical packages to answer specific research questions; code management and project documentation; presenting results at weekly team meetings; preparing results for both academic and policy audiences; other tasks, as assigned.
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Math, Economics, Statistics, or Computer Science and strong quantitative and programming skills are required. Candidates with previous research experience are strongly preferred. Most programming will be done in Stata, though experience with other languages will be beneficial. The ideal candidate must also have strong communications skills. These include the ability to interpret and explain findings to a variety of audiences. Candidates should expect to closely collaborate with the professors and other SEII team members at all stages of the research project.
The position is located at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. An employment term of at least one year is expected. Start date is flexible, though candidates who can begin on or before May 15, 2015 are strongly preferred. The position is well suited for candidates who are considering pursuing a graduate degree in Economics or another quantitative discipline.
