Baja Project catalyzes change in El Barril, Baja California, Mexico to empower its residents and improve its education, health, infrastructure and quality of life. Our guiding principles are sustainable development, cultural respect, partnership and creativity. We are a student-led consulting group of graduate students.

Position Description

Baja Project seeks a Community Development Intern to support and continue our quarterly in-field consulting projects for the summer of 2013 in El Barril, Mexico. The intern will be expected to engage with community members to address ongoing concerns/needs, as well as build capacity around current projects, including, but not limited to:

  • Organizing community members in the construction of the Health Clinic
  • Advancing Aquaculture pilot project
  • Monitoring Scholarship disbursements
  • Researching markets for Women’s Sewing and Jewelry Co-Ops and Fishing Co-Op
  • Assisting in the certification of the Kindergarten teacher
  • Managing project design of Community Garden

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Proficient/fluent in Spanish
  • Strong familiarity/interest with in-the-field community development
  • Ability to work independently; self-starter
  • Excellent written, oral, and organizational skills
  • Undergraduate or Graduate student (18 years +)
  • Flexibility in dealing with a diverse set of individuals and organizations
  • Current passport

Additional Information

  • Must be available for departure June 2013 with minimum commitment of 6 weeks
  • Prior to departure must be available to attend orientation and optional weekly meetings located at UCSD to familiarize and understand project initiatives
  • Living stipend and homestay provided
