China’s rapid economic growth demands growth in energy supplies and consumption. Despite progress in renewables, nuclear, and energy efficiency, most of this need will be met with increased fossil energy consumption. This has led to breathtaking changes in China’s environment and infrastructure, and geopolitical stance. These in turn has led to equally breathtaking investments in clean technology and profound policy changes. Fundamental issues of trade, global sustainability, and national security are tied up in how the U.S. and China will cooperate and compete around fossil energy development and use.
As Chief Energy Technologist for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Dr. Friedmann has testified before the U.S. house, Senate, and several state legislatures, published in Foreign Affairs and the New York Times, and worked with many private companies, NGOs, and government agencies. He has worked closely with the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Energy Association. He is currently the program leader for the California Energy Systems for the 21st Century (CES-21) and co-director for the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center on Clean Coal and CCS.
